Title: 'It was everywhere': Australian woman's body scan comes back stained with black
Author: Kate Aubusson
Text type: Article
Date finished: 22/09/17

This article is about a 53 year old woman who had just got a body scan and found out that she had stage four diffuse B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Meaning cancer. She didn't realize she had cancer until the scan showed the black marks all over her body scan. "It was everywhere. There was so much in there and I hadn't known I was sick." My mum's step brother died of cancer a few years ago and was fighting it for roughly 5 years. It is really sad to lose someone to something so dreadful.

Movie name: IT (2017)
Director: Andrés Muschietti
Genre: Horror
Date finished: 20/09/17

Seven young kids in Derry, Maine, faced their worst nightmare. An ancient shapeshifting evil creature emerges from the sewer every 27 years to prey on the town's children. Getting together over the horrifying summer, the friends had to get over their personal fears to battle the murderous, bloodthirsty clown known as Pennywise. At the end of the movie, they scared off Pennywise because they weren't scared of him anymore and that made Pennywise scared. In my own experiences, I've had to overcome my fears about a week ago when my Youth Group went to clip n climb, I was stuck on the pillars and I wouldn't get down off the pillars because I was afraid that the machine that was holding me up would break and I'd fall to my death. I eventually got rid of that fear and slid down the pole instead of jumping.

I can relate to Bill Denbrough. He has that character that cares about his friends and family and will put them all in danger just to save one person. His little brother Georgie went missing and he didn't know how he did until he found Pennywise. He tried everything to try and rescue his little brother and risked his friends life but in the end he couldn't rescue him. I find this really sad that Bill couldn't be with Georgie anymore and I have a similar situation. I have a little sister called Crystal, she's only four years old and I haven't seen her in two months. Me and her have that bond where if we don't see each other we feel lost. Mum messaged me saying that Crystal misses me but I can't go see her. I feel like this is similar to Bill and Georgie. At the end of the movie, Bill finds the paper boat he made for Georgie and breaks down crying because that is the day Georgie goes missing..

Title: Five-year-old and two other Porirua children 'lucky to survive' after ingesting synthetic drug
Author: Jarrod Nicoll
Text type: Article
Date finished: 21/09/17

This article is about three kids aged 5, 8 and 13. They had to go to hospital and were very lucky to survive because they ingested synthetic cannabis. "The children were not smoking it. We are still working through how it got in their bodies" says Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Ferguson. In my opinion, the kids found the synthetic drug at home and thought it was food and decided to eat it, meaning the parents are responsible for having use of a Class A drug inside their house for kids to find.

Drug use in New Zealand is starting to get out of hand. 'The Porirua sample contained a synthetic cannabanoid called 5F-ADB, which was linked to the unexplained overdose deaths of 10 people in Japan in 2014, Bell said.' Teenagers have been heard of doing Class A drugs like LSD and magic mushrooms. Things like this are really bad for a teenagers mental and physical health because they are still growing until late 20s. So by them taking drugs will make them less motivated to do anything in the long run.

Title: Doctor Who, Monstrous Missions
Author: Gary Russell and Jonathan Green
Text type: Novel
Date finished: 16/09/17

Doctor Who was an interesting novel. It gave that feeling that I was inside the novel talking about the experiences that were going on around me. The main character was called the Doctor and he was really weird, doing things out of the extraordinary. '"I'd hold onto something if I were you" the Doctor said, doing another manic circuit of the control console.' Is one of the lines in this novel that made the Doctor seem 'extraordinary' in a way where it made the novel interesting.

Doctor Who from my experience of reading the book made me want to keep reading it because it drew my attention by expressing things more than what a normal novel would. It made reading the book fun and brung a new sense of humour that I haven't read yet. '"That tree!" the Doctor said, pointing to the low-hanging branches of another cypress. "Get climbing!"' This is a quite funny because they are trying to hide from dinosaurs, and climbing up a low tree won't necessarily hide you from dinosaurs.

Title: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Author: J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, John Tiffany
Text type: Play
Date finished: 31st February 2017

This play was the 8th story of Harry Potter. 17 years later. His son Albus, And Draco Malfoy's son Scorpius, travel back in time to rescue the spare, Cedrick Digorry. Except they only have 5 minutes to try and change everything. And every time they fail. They both, Albus and Scorpius, have seen many different worlds, by themselves or together.

I enjoyed this story as I like the Harry Potter series. But I don't like how they did it. It would have been better if it wasn't a play and it was just a normal novel like the rest. I reckon they could've distracted Hermione a lot better than what Ron (Albus) did. For example, when Ron (Albus) had to distract Hermione from going into her office as Harry (Scorpius) and Hermione (Delphi) were trying to find the time turner in Hermione's office, Ron (Albus) tried to use things Ron would say to Hermione in real life to make sure Hermione wouldn't go into her office. If they played that a lot better by letting Hermione into her office and catching Harry (Scorpius) And Hermione (Delphi) then there would be a lot more action as Hermione would be shocked to see what has happened.

I could relate to Albus Potter because he argued with his dad a lot over nothing. For example, one night before they were going back to Hogwarts, Harry came in to give Albus his blanket from when he was a baby. Harry told Albus that the blanket would give him good luck. But then Albus didn't want the blanket and they ended up arguing. I reckon that most teenagers growing up would argue a lot with their parents, because they think they rule everyone and they can't do bad. I guess it's just what teenagers are like. I argue with my dad a lot, even when we don't mean to. I'd say something nice and dad takes it the wrong way and we end up arguing.

Title: Naughts and Crosses
Author: Malorie Blackman
Text type: Novel
Date finished: 20/03/17

This novel was about racism. Sephy was a cross - so she was black - and Callum was a naught - so he was white. They were forbidden to see each other, but they still did. The crosses ruled the naughts, so Callum's dad and older brother were apart of a group that assassinated crosses.

I related to Callum a lot, because he also got discluded from his family and has only one friend. A friend he rarely sees. An example of this is when Callum was always fighting with his parents to let him go see Sephy - the popular cross. I always argued with my parents, so this is why I can relate.

I liked this story a lot because it was really interesting and it talked about racism right throughout the novel. An example of this is when Sephy says "You're a naught and I'm a cross and there's nowhere for us to be, nowhere for us to go where we'd be left in peace... That's why I started crying. That's why I couldn't stop. For all the things we might've had, and all the things we're never going to have." I think what Malorie is trying to tell us, is that racism is unacceptable and people can have friends with the other race. I don't like how the naughts were treated, and wish I can help stop racism.

Sushi

Why do we need to clean our ingredients?
  - So the vegetables are clean and free from bacteria.

What were two high risk we needed to worry about?
  - Rice and chicken were the two high risk foods we need to worry about.

What two strategies did you put in place?
  - Cooked the chicken to 75 degrees in a hot pan with a little bit of oil, and made sure the rice was cooked because all the water and moisture was gone.

How do you know this is keeping you safe?
  - Because chicken is cooked to 75 degrees to make sure the bacteria is cooked and we don't get salmonella, and in the rice.

Beef Wraps

Why do we need to clean our ingredients?
   - So we can get the bacteria out of our vegetables that will contaminate our food.

What were two high risk foods we needed to worry about.
   - The beef schnitzel was one of the things in this dish we needed to worry about.

What two strategies did you put in place?
  - Made sure we cooked the beef schnitzel was cooked to 75 degrees to make sure the bacteria is killed.

How do you know this is keeping you safe?
 - Because I know that bacteria is killed at 75 degrees.

  1. Cook the rice in a large saucepan of boiling water for 12 minutes or until tender. Drain and leave to cool ( http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-cook-rice-on-the-stove-44333).
  2. Prepare vegetables and bacon: Chop bacon. Peel and grate carrot. Finely slice shallots.
  3. Using a whisk, lightly beat eggs in a small bowl. Heat oil in non-stick wok or large frying pan over medium heat. Add eggs. Swirl over base to form an omelette. Cook 2 minutes. Turnover. Cook 2 minutes until set. Transfer to a chopping board. Set aside to cool slightly. Cut into short strips.
  4. Add bacon to wok. Cook 4 minutes until light golden. Add carrot. Stir fry 1 minute. Add shallots, peas and rice. Cook, stirring, 3-4 minutes. Add egg and soy sauce. Stir until heated through. Serve immediately, with extra soy.

Why is this important?
It is important to keep you, others, and your food safe to ensure you don't get food poisoning or other diseases.

Give 2 strategies you used yesterday to ensure your food was safe.
- Used different boards and knives so we don't cross-contaminate.
- Make sure the food was heated/cooked to the right temperature of 75℃.

How do you know it was safe?
Because at 75℃ bacteria is dying and it'll make our food and ourselves safe.

Crispy chicken with wedges

Friday 17th

1. Why is H/S important in the food industry?
   - So you don't harm yourself or others or contaminate your food

2. What 2-3 key guidelines did you follow yesterday to ensure that your food was safe
  - Used the right boards and knives to ensure we didn't cross-contaminate
  - Tied our hair up, wore clean aprons, nail polish and jewelry removed to ensure nothing went in our food that shouldn't be there.

3. Name one type of bacteria you were protecting yourself from, what action did you take, how do you know you were safe?
  - We were protecting ourselves from Salmonella. We used the yellow cutting board and knife and checked to make sure the internal temperature of the cooked chicken was 75℃. I know I was safe because at 75℃ bacteria starts to die.
