Reading Log #1

Reading Log #1

Title: Naughts and Crosses
Author: Malorie Blackman
Text type: Novel
Date finished: 20/03/17

This novel was about racism. Sephy was a cross - so she was black - and Callum was a naught - so he was white. They were forbidden to see each other, but they still did. The crosses ruled the naughts, so Callum's dad and older brother were apart of a group that assassinated crosses.

I related to Callum a lot, because he also got discluded from his family and has only one friend. A friend he rarely sees. An example of this is when Callum was always fighting with his parents to let him go see Sephy - the popular cross. I always argued with my parents, so this is why I can relate.

I liked this story a lot because it was really interesting and it talked about racism right throughout the novel. An example of this is when Sephy says "You're a naught and I'm a cross and there's nowhere for us to be, nowhere for us to go where we'd be left in peace... That's why I started crying. That's why I couldn't stop. For all the things we might've had, and all the things we're never going to have." I think what Malorie is trying to tell us, is that racism is unacceptable and people can have friends with the other race. I don't like how the naughts were treated, and wish I can help stop racism.

  1. Hi Sam. I really like how you related yourself to Callum and Sephy's relationship. I would love to hear more about that. This is what a reading log is for: Giving as much detail as possible about your own personal experience that relates to the book. Try that next time.
